Back in March/April of 2025 I was first experimenting with Internet Explorer 5/6 inside Windows 99, with the possibility of going back in time without feeling like you were in the present, which is a dilemma of modern web dev. More than 14 months later I am still hard at work at this and getting closer to something that feels right. There have been some breakthroughs. Stay tuned and please keep sharing the OS :)

Absolutely incredible website. I lost my mind when Half-Life finished installing and actually ran. Half-Life! In my browser!! This is so beautiful; the hours and dedication put in to programming this really show. Thank you for it. I saw you shared an 88x31 button in a reply below that I would love to add to my own site's "cool websites" page in a near-future update.

That makes me incredibly happy to hear, and honestly one of the biggest reasons why it was added in the first place! Little known trivia, the WASM emulation from that Half-Life implementation was so volatile and would always crash when the user closed it, so I just added a BSOD to cover it up. A fake crash covering a real crash :D

Exceptionally well done. With computing power what it is nowadays it's entirely possible to emulate/run the entire legacy OS in the browser

Thank you! It's less about computing power and more about approach: most of it is a methodical recreation in TypeScript/Preact rather than emulation, which is why the footprint stays small (and why you could run this on a pretty old machine with a modern browser).
