I'll do another one of these since it's relevant to recent dev work for an upcoming release--The favicon! In March 1999, Microsoft released Internet Explorer 5, which supported favicons for the first time. Originally, the favicon was a file called favicon.ico placed in the root directory of a website. It was used in Internet Explorer's favorites (bookmarks) and next to the URL in the address bar.

Today's Did You Know about those 88x31 banners: The size traces back to Netscapeโs 1995 Netscape Now! promotion, which rewarded webmasters for displaying an โauthorizedโ browser badge on their site. In the Wayback Machine, the website shows that the button appeared on Netscapeโs own site in 1995, and GeoCities picked up these in 1996.

I need to reverse engineer the Counter-Strike beta source code (valve owns it, it was never released) to do it, which is out of scope for the time being.

This is probably one of the coolest sites I've seen on Neocities! I'm mainly a Mac guy and the only older Windows OS I've ever really used was Windows XP, so it's super cool being able to mess around with 99 in a web browser of all things!

I played around for a good hour, and had so much fun!! already bluescreened Win 99 3 times and crashed windows explorer 2 ๐ญ I have absolutely no idea how you managed to make a whole OS like this, but my jaw is literally on the floor :O

It was supposed to be Notepad, Internet Explorer (with pages I repaired from 1999 in archive.org) and MS-DOS. Then it grew to Display Properties, Date/Time Settings, and so on and so forth. Some of the starting code was built off github repos, and some were jettisoned as we learned the design systems were off. Lots of VM referencing. There is some documentation in https://win99.dev/devblog/ but it needs updating.

Parsing favicons from 1999, 2000... their usage was quite rare. It appears that the adoption wasn't really incorporated until tabbed browsing came along 2002-2004 (to help distinguish tabs through iconography). Furthermore, early IE only looked at the server root (http://domain.com/favicon.ico), so individual user sites couldn't have their own favicons.
