use their preferred pronouns and name if they don't know them and you're not planning to show your friend to them

If they're people he knows or who know him, ask him how he would prefer you navigate that. If he asks you to keep using his old names and pronouns then you will know that you are keeping him safe by doing what he's asked you to do and that helps a lot. If he asks you to switch to his new name and pronouns then he's probably already told them or is otherwise prepared to manage the fallout.

Agree with halfempty on if they don't know him. They won't know better, it'll just sound like a new friend.

As a trans man that is still halfly in closet due to transphobic family. I think that you should ask them as littlest book said :) Bless your heart, I can't imagine having a friend so good that they worry about how they talk about me to other people.

I was a TERF & have a trans friend. It takes time to process. For me, I did research and checked up on my friend to do my best on understanding trans issues. Even when referring to my friends to people who knew her, I refer to her preferred pronouns and names. Sometimes old friends will ask "how is deadname" and I just answer as normal "she's..." people don't usually correct on pronouns.

if people correct me use of pronouns I just laugh and say "yeah ... is a she now" and they think its a joke. Since this is recent, you both should process. You are a good friend :)
