when people my age parrot the idea that “you don’t owe anyone anything” i don’t see it as the rallying cry of a uniquely selfish generation… i see it as people playing the cards they’ve been dealt and doing as they’ve been taught. these attitudes don’t come out of nowhere.

What I've found (and I'm in my 40s, now) No real change for the better ever happens in politics. It may have once done, in the 60s when you had the Civil Rights Movement, or in the 90s with the End of Apartheid and the Berlin Wall coming down, or even earlier when you had the Suffragette movement, but there is always something that comes along that undermines it and it ends up slipping backwards into barbarism. Or

you never feel like any of the politician that are campaigning are ever trying to do something that will help you, or if there are, people get swept up with issues that are exaggerated or manipulated so that voters focus on that instead.

thanks so much for the comment!!! certainly history moves in cycles; i only wish people didn’t view “do nothing” as a reasonable response. i’ve always been of the belief that if you can do the right thing, you have a responsibility to, because there’s no guarantee that someone else will; so for someone to shirk that responsibility by thinking only of their own convenience is abominable to me.

now that second part i absolutely agree with, it’s such a shame.

I'm not sure if this is an issue in the U.S., but people in my country have a really bad Messiah Complex. A lot of people don't vote because they think someone else will come in and fix every problem we have as opposed to trying to demand change. There's been quite the amount of protests in neighboring countries, so I hope people here follow suit.

it’s definitely that way here too! i think we in the U.S. are, by and large, a very complacent people. many of us have been conditioned to value even the smallest, most temporary comforts over the kind of change we can achieve through sacrifice. i speak from experience. i’m still trying to find out where the line is for me.

Bro it actively drives me mad how complacent people are here. Especially living in a red state in the southeast US. People constantly complain about how shitty things are, how terrible their lives have become, how they can't afford things etc. & then vote AGAINST their OWN BEST INTEREST OR DON'T VOTE AT ALL!! I'm very passionate about politics, but talking about them here is MISERY because ALL people want to do is--

--bitch & never DO anything ABOUT IT! Not to mention the lack of community involvement--it's always people dragging each other down rather than uplifting them & providing resources to help people out! It's just rancid out here, & at this point I'm just trying to get through the day. the little things keep me from wanting to crash out.

I think part of it comes down to failing education. Another big part is how our media has been bought out by democracy-fearing propagandists. Anyhow, people don't understand the affects politicians and activists have on day-to-day life. Look at quickly people forgot about the major quality of life changes that came out of the years of work up leading up to Obergefell v Hodges.

One of the worst frustrations whether or not voters are paying attention is that every time Republicans control the federal government, Democrats have to spend the next few years *after* regaining control to undo the infrastructure, social, and legal system damage. Smart, energetic, supported progressives are ready to push for improvements, too, but if they aren't fast and loud about it, the Repubs are allowed back.

So it looks like Democrats and small party members "don't do anything" and the Republicans can cash in for a few years again on the repairs that the Dems did make. Because the worst of the damage and the best improvements take years to show among the general populace. It's vicious.

And it's hard for me to blame average voters and non-voters for being tired, confused, uninformed anymore. They don't know what they don't know. Try to point out what's working against them-- they can't see it! But still, they *need* to care, en masse, if we can't otherwise sway the people in power to close the power gaps.
