an archive of 24 years worth of blogs, bad haircuts, and metalcore. if you remember any of my sites say hi
these feel so familiar, like 2003-2005 era xanga and emos, especially that grungy analog style, it was culture to me. everyone would wear t-shirts over long sleeves and host LAN parties, the internet was still a beige box u could walk away from. it's weird seeing a younger generation reviving this aesthetic, maybe its just that culture now is stagnant, maybe it's because the past was better times.
i rember discovering heavy music like deftones thru the internet, which was my gateway to downloading obscure skramz from music blogs, it already felt like archaeology to sift thru records from the 90s-00s. i rember all the metalcore acts that the cool scene kids would listen to like atreyu, bmth, norma jean, and feeling completely alienated.
i thought i'd see at least some representation of that y2k emo look on neocities somewhere and avenue.neocities.org is one of the only accounts that nails it and also works to preserve it. they have an instagram that is dedicated to looking for blogs like those in wayback and i was shocked to see designs that look like i made them but somehow didn't. alternate reality type stuff
i read an art critic say this generation is paralyzed by fear. makes sense, every generation before had something to look forward to. this is the first generation i've seen more interested in looking back than forward. it's interesting how deftones is "the" band that rose out of this when they were derivative of a lot of bands that aren't getting that shine rn. don't get me started on shoegaze revival. emo, though-
