Super Mario Odyssey! That isn't retro, though. My second favourite video game is Katamari Damacy, which IS retro.

The plot's a bit weird. The King Of All The Cosmos has accidentally destroyed all the stars of the night sky in a drunken slumber, and has put the job on his tiny prince son to fix it. You play as the prince rolling up landscapes with the titular Katamari ball, and adhesive sphere that picks up anything smaller than itself. The ball gets bigger the more you roll.

The original is for the PS2 but a great remaster is on steam and other modern consoles. It and it's sequel, We Love Katamari, are some of my favourites. If you asked me what the most perfect video game is, I'd tell you that there is none as perfection is impossible. BUT, if you were to ask me what game has reached closest to perfection... I'd answer Katamari Damacy

Eh, I think retro's more of a vibe than a set amount of time. Rather than "x amount of years", imo it makes more sense to define it as "everything which took on a distinct visual aesthetic because of the technical limitations of the time as opposed to just looking like a lower-res modern game" (so, PS1/N64 and everything before). Also 9 years isn't even that long ago lmao.
