@discreteideas i view prayer ropes as somewhat of a middle-point between eastern meditation and western prayer beads. practically, they are very similar, but we usually only repeat the Jesus prayer (much like the kyrie eleison). prayer ropes can also have many shapes, some even coming in bracelet form

nowadays there are people who expect everyone from their friends to their favorite celebrities to address hot-button political issues, so it doesn't surprise me to see this in the world of software. that said, i don't mind it if devs want to express their views, and just because they're putting ukranian flags on their website/etc. doesn't mean they aren't supporting the cause in other ways too

+because (like you said) foss IS political, i guess this form of advocacy from creators of foss just feels more legitimate to me than when it comes from other people/areas, such as social media influencers

I could talk about this for hours and still not come into a conclusion. In short: it's annoying. I remember https://expressjs.com having a huge "black lives matter" on top of the page for months, possibly one supporting ukraine too. Now they removed it and suddenly they don't matter anymore? It' strange, hypocrytical, and just virtue signaling

Maybe software projects should just have a "politics" subpage and post everything there. Some manifestos or something. I know I am being cynical, but look at https://gleam.run , a programming language. "Black lives matter. Trans rights are human rights. No nazi bullsh*t." Damn.

I guess my only problem with this how often I see this. It kinda feels stale now, like it's lost its meaning and is all virtue signaling. But I am myself pushing the Mikan Tsumiki propaganda so what do I know. Sorry for commenting a bazzilion times on this post

@project190 foss is political, but it is ultimately related to software. There's a difference between a tool that says "software should respect user freedom" and a tool that says "rainight rules!!". I indeed rule, but not everyone agrees and its soo unrelated to what the software is doing in the first place. The issue at hand exists in a different category.

@rainight i agree that it's not strictly related to software or necessary at all, i just said i don't mind it, esp given that creators of foss are already politically involved by creating and supporting foss in the first place (so, it's not surprising that they're politically involved in more ways than one)

i like your take on this issue - i do like most theological views that put Christ first and center :) it wasn't until Jesus that humankind could truly know God, so perhaps it is better to take the Old Testament as a foretelling of Christ, and not a "treatise" on who/what/how God is
So how do you recouncile this genocide story in the old testament with your understanding of God and morality?
Absolutely. And I think it changes from book to book. Chapter to chapter. Sometimes I think we read a very direct foretelling of Christ. Other times it does seem to be more a historical account of the Jewish people
@rainight. As a history of what a group of people did, perhaps whilst thinking God commanded it. But I have no issue saying that what was recorded in this story was obviously immoral and clearly contradicts the teachings of Christ
