in very simple words: for example, when you want to add a site's button there are two ways. (1) save the image, upload it in your site, and then link it as normal. this is not hotlinking. or (2) link it using as the image source the very own link the site has for its button (it should end in .jpg, .png or whatever extension it is). this is hotlinking.
